Internet Browsers
Avant
Avant Browser is an Internet Explorer based, no-frills web browser. Avant includes basic mouse gestures, tabbed browsing with movable tabs, and a full 500% zoom. It falls short in comparison with our higher ranked internet browsers, but is a fairly professional looking alternative.

Google Chrome
Google has joined the Internet browser competition full force with a very impressive entry, Chrome. Google Chrome takes a unique approach to browsing the web, combining top notch features with speed, compatibility, and simplicity.

Deepnet Explorer
Deepnet Explorer is a fair browser in that it has a handful of features, but nothing that overly impresses. Deepnet Explorer's primary focus is on facilitating P2P networking and RSS feeds. It offers several useful tools and features, but fails to deliver all that the best internet browsers do.

Mozilla Firefox
Experience the simplistic power of Firefox, one of the original FREE Internet browsers. This web browser packs top–notch features and blazing speed into a tidy, intuitive interface that will help you navigate the web the way you want to. A few outstanding features include tabbed browsing, an integrated search engine and many add–ons of all types. This high-performance browser also has a massive selection of great customization features and tools to help you personalize your Web experience. New to version 3.5 of Firefox is improved speed, a private browsing mode, even more security than in previous versions, open audio and video formats, and a bunch of additional improvements.

Flock
Flock is the Internet browser targeted towards social butterflies. Flock is the Mozilla powered browser that specifically meets the needs of online social networkers by helping you keep informed when friends post or a favourite site is updated. It has a slick interface and plenty of features.

Internet Explorer 8
Microsoft's current standard is Internet Explorer 8. It is a good browser with great features. Additional features in version 8 make it even better and definitely worth your consideration.

Maxthon
Maxthon is a versatile Internet browser that you can tailor to fit your web browsing needs. Customization options include the security settings, the interface layout, and useful plug-ins that you can download like a personal information management tool, decorative skins and the Google Toolbar.

Opera
Opera sings to a different tune, and it sounds great. This Internet browser has all of the entertaining and practical features that will not only make surfing the web functional, but also fun.

PhaseOut
PhaseOut is a flash-based shell for Internet Explorer. It adds some really impressive looking graphics and customizable skins to your internet browsing experience. If futuristic looks and space inspired graphics are your thing, you might want to consider PhaseOut.

Safari
Safari is not an Apple exclusive anymore; the top-notch Internet browser is now available for PCs as well. Safari provides the Mac look and feel in Internet browsing. It is complete with tabbed browsing that includes a save tabs feature.

Anti-Virus
Avast
Avast made great strides in its previous update. Version 5 set the stage for the modern, massively popular, and free security suite with a new interface that ditched a quirky, late-'90s jukebox style for a more polished look. Easier to navigate, it also became easier to add new features.

Make no mistake; Avast 6 adds features both big and small. Some that had previously only been available to paid upgrade users are now free for all versions, and newer features have been seamlessly added to the interface experience. If you're familiar with Avast 5, upgrading to Avast 6 won't be that big of a leap.

AVG
The never-ending mantra chanted by security suite vendors sounds a lot like "faster scans, easier to use, better performance," and AVG has released a new version that it says accomplishes all three. Certainly, the scans are faster, it does install more quickly, and some tweaks to the interface have made it easier to use. However, changes to the engine that powers the detection and removal of threats has made it hard to come to a conclusion until independent labs return their efficacy results later this year.

MalwareBytes
MalwareBytes Anti-Malware is a surprisingly effective freeware antimalware tool. It's a relatively speedy malware remover, with the quick scan taking about 8 minutes even with other high-resource programs running. The heuristics engine proved on multiple computers during empirical testing that it was capable of determining the difference between false positives and dangerous apps.

SpyBot Search & Destroy
SpyBot - Search & Destroy has been in the antispyware game for a long time offering features we've come to expect in the best apps in the category, but bugs and false positives make it difficult to recommend.

Spyware Terminator
This spyware scanner and removal tool does the job, but enabling some functions may cause slight slowdowns.

Spyware Terminator's crisp, clean interface uses simple buttons and tabs to operate and set options. The latest spyware signatures are automatically downloaded, and the real-time protection keeps baby-sitting to a minimum. Real-time protection monitors key spyware types and Windows objects, though slight system slowdowns depend on your machine. Those features and the simple scheduler will make this app appealing to novices.

Threatfire
ThreatFire offers real-time prevention of virus and malware infections by identifying suspicious behavior ("zero-day" events) as it happens, before malicious code installs itself on your PC. Formerly known as CyberHawk, ThreatFire has made some dramatic and noticeable feature improvements since it was bought by PC Tools.

Graphics
Gimp
The volunteer developers of The GIMP have been working hard to develop a polished, user-friendly, and freely distributed image editor. Although the separated palette windows may disturb those users who are used to more traditional layouts, your comfort level should grow exponentially as you discover how pain-free the program is.

Paint.NET
If all you want is a quick image retouch, Photoshop is overkill. Paint.NET, on the other hand, is an open-source freeware editor with all the essentials, including tools to crop, rotate, and resize images, adjust colors, and create collages. It supports common image formats--JPEG, PNG, GIF, TIFF, and others--but not high-resolution RAW files. There are enough basic and intermediate effects and features to keep image-tweakers happy, including a red-eye removal tool that has seen dramatic improvements. Unlike most free image editors, Paint.NET supports layers, history, and has an actions manager. The pleasing interface boasts semitransparent windows for ease of use.

Picassa
Picasa is a free digital photo organizer and editor which has improved considerably since its first release. Although I expect better organization and search capabilities from a Google product, Picasa is excellent for beginners and casual digital shooters who want to find all their pictures, sort them into albums, do quick edits, and share with friends and family. Folks with very large photo collections and advanced editing needs should look elsewhere. Picasa 3.5 no longer bears the "beta" designation, adds excellent people recognition technology, and improves the geotagging, import, and keyword tagging features.

SageLight Image Editor
SageLight was designed from scratch for the new digital age, making editing easy and intuitive. SageLight lets you experiment and get results easily without having to know anything about image editing. SageLight is great for the beginner.

Video
Freemake Video Convertor
Freemake Video Converter promises to be to Windows users what HandBrake is to Mac users. This free app is built using Microsoft's .Net Framework 4, a programming model that enables developers to provide software with interfaces that are easy to use and visually appealing. Certainly, both characteristics can be seen when it comes to Freemake, which offers a Mac-like window with rounded edges and large, explicit function buttons.

Freemake Video Downloader
Freemake Video Downloader is a free video ripping application which downloads online videos from YouTube, Facebook, Hulu, ComedyCentral, Dailymotion, MTV, Vimeo, plus forty similar websites more. Freemake Video Downloader is the fastest ever utility to grab online videos in any format available, extract original audio tracks without any quality loss, or convert videos to a certain video/audio format like AVI, MP3, MKV, or for portable devices, such as iPod, iPhone, iPad, PSP and Android.

Miro
The concept is brilliant, yet simple: create a jukebox video and audio player that can subscribe to and download podcasts while managing your locally saved media. On the face of it, this might sound like iTunes, but the sharing component is an essential aspect of the program. Miro has always been geared toward video, and it shows in the program's design. When you launch the app, a left sidebar hosts a folder tree for managing your videos, with links to Miro's own video guide, a search window; Web site embeds including Hulu and torrents, and playlists. The central pane does double duty for viewing videos and searching for new ones, although the latest version won't stop playback when you switch windows. Playback controls are on the bottom.

MPlayer
MPlayer is a movie player which runs on many systems (see the documentation). It plays most MPEG/VOB, AVI, Ogg/OGM, VIVO, ASF/WMA/WMV, QT/MOV/MP4, RealMedia, Matroska, NUT, NuppelVideo, FLI, YUV4MPEG, FILM, RoQ, PVA files, supported by many native, XAnim, and Win32 DLL codecs. You can watch VideoCD, SVCD, DVD, 3ivx, DivX 3/4/5 and even WMV movies.. Another great feature of MPlayer is the wide range of supported output drivers. It works with X11, Xv, DGA, OpenGL, SVGAlib, fbdev, AAlib, DirectFB, but you can use GGI, SDL (and this way all their drivers), VESA (on every VESA compatible card, even without X11!) and some low level card-specific drivers (for Matrox, 3Dfx and ATI), too! Most of them support software or hardware scaling, so you can enjoy movies in fullscreen. MPlayer supports displaying through some hardware MPEG decoder boards, such as the Siemens DVB, DXR2 and DXR3/Hollywood+. MPlayer has an onscreen display (OSD) for status information, nice big antialiased shaded subtitles and visual feedback for keyboard controls. European/ISO 8859-1,2 (Hungarian, English, Czech, etc), Cyrillic and Korean fonts are supported along with 12 subtitle formats (MicroDVD, SubRip, OGM, SubViewer, Sami, VPlayer, RT, SSA, AQTitle, JACOsub, PJS and our own: MPsub). DVD subtitles (SPU streams, VOBsub and Closed Captions) are supported as well.

VLC Media Player
VLC Media Player is a long-time open-source favorite, and the latest version is also the first to be out of beta development. It's not the only option for free video playback, but it's one of the best, and the feature updates in version 1 make it well worth the upgrade.

Office
Adobe Reader
The new version of this indispensable product doesn't introduce revolutionary changes, but it doesn't have to. As the low-end PDF reader, it simply keeps up with Acrobat Professional and Standard. This release adds the ability to play back embedded multimedia files in MP3, QuickTime, Macromedia Flash, Real, and Windows Media formats, as well as to submit Adobe PDF forms. It also replaces some of the icons in the default interface with optional, dockable toolbars. You might as well install this now before a Web site you visit prompts you to download it, because you'll need it.

OpenOffice.org
OpenOffice.org 3 is free open-source office software suite which comes with word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, graphics, databases and more. It is available in a variety of languages and works on most operating systems.

Installation is simple and you can also download a variety of extensions giving you loads more features to play around with, inc the ability to create PDF files.

The interface is similar to Microsoft Office 2003 so is easy to get used to. It supports many different file types including Microsoft Word and Excel, so you don't need to worry about opening Microsoft files (excl Publisher files).

PDF Printer 995
Pdf995 Printer Driver is a simple useful tool which installs like a printer driver and creates professional quality pdf documents. It can convert any printable document to pdf files by selecting the “Print” command from any word processor and works with any Postscript to PDF converter.

Stickies
Stickies combines the best and most important features that you could want in a notes program with the added glory of being free. The program's main feature, the sticky note, can be customized on nearly every level, from font to color to behavior. Once loaded, the program installs a yellow sticky pad in your Quick Launch bar. Double-click on it to load a new sticky, or right-click on it to access saved stickies and configuration options.

Utilities
Absolute Uninstaller
Absolute Uninstaller is an intuitive program that promises to remove software components that the Windows Add or Remove Programs function cannot. The program's ease of use and effectiveness make it a great choice for this task.

Adobe Air
A single platform to download individual applications across multiple operating systems! What's not to love? Adobe Air (which stands for Adobe Integrated Runtime) is a sleek runtime platform that installs and runs an application on Windows, Mac, and Linux computers. You'll need it to download applications built using Air. Since developers need only make one version of the app for all three computing platforms, they can spend more quality time creating their product.

Adobe Flash Player
Adobe's latest version of the Flash Player browser plug-in is just as trouble-free as previous versions, existing unobtrusively in your system until Web-based animations, games, or ubiquitous Flash ads require its services.

Adobe Shockwave Player
Adobe Shockwave Player lets you enjoy multimedia games, learning applications, and product demonstrations on the Web using exciting new 3D technology.

Belarc Advisor
In order to effectively maintain your computer and proactively deal with problems that may occur, it is virtually essential that you have some basic information about your particular system readily available. Disk Speed Up
Disk SpeedUp is a tool to analyze, defrag and optimize disks or a single file/folder for peak computer performance. Disk SpeedUp can analyze all fragments on drives and show how fragmented the drives are before you defrag. You can get an intuitive view of drive fragmentation through the drive map if you choose analyze selected and also get a new view of the defragged disk analysis result after a successful defrag.

How could Disk SpeedUp defrag and optimize drives? Disk SpeedUp detects all the fragments in seconds and rearranges files stored on a disk to occupy contiguous storage locations, intelligently reorganizes most fragmentation for the purpose of speeding up access speed, quickening applications launch, increasing search speed, shortening system startup times and enhancing overall system performance.

Recuva

Registry Defrag
During the normal operation of a Windows system, registry data is constantly being written to and removed from the registry. Over time this data becomes scattered within the registry file and when information is deleted from the registry holes are left which fragment the data within the registry. Our Free Registry Defrag optimizes your registry by removing gaps and wasted space, thus improves the whole system performance.

Registry Repair
This registry cleaner does its main job quickly and accurately, but we also appreciate a few of its extra features. True to its name, the utility scans your PC's registry, then fixes any errors it finds.

Security Process Explorer
Security Process Explorer is a freeware replacement for the Windows native Task Manager. It comes with some very useful functions, but the simplistic layout doesn't adapt well when displaying deeper investigations into the relationships between different processes.

System Information for Windows
Think you know the innards of your Windows system? Well think again. Download and run SIW, and you'll realize just how little you know. It's probably the most comprehensive free system analyzer you'll find anywhere.
